Macksville (Bellingen River and Warrell Creek) February 2008

I forgot to take my HRM/GPS with me for the Bellingen River paddle, however I had it for the paddle down Warrell Creek, you can see the map or detailed data if you wish.

Getting started at the bridge in Bellingen.

The current is swinging me around a bit.

A small waterfall I found upriver form Bellingen.

Looking up river from next to the water fall.

Same place.

This is where I fell in. I was constantly paddling up through the small rapid sections. This time there was a lot of water coming across from the right hand side to where the narrow section of the river was moving fast.

fullsize
As soon as the nose of the boat got to the fast waer it spun around into the middle of the fast moving water and towards the other bank. I fell in half way around and had to swim the boat back to where it is sitting here.

Coming back under the bellingen bridge on the way down, the small rapid water sections were a heap of fun, I probably should have started at Thora and simply paddled down through all of them, after Bellingen there were only one or two really fast water sections.

fullsize
As I cam under the bridge I saw a number of people who had paddled up to Bellingen from lower down (I saw their cars where they put in lower down in the river). There were two lovely strip panel wood kayaks among them.

Easy paddling down river from Bellingen.

On the bank next to Bellingen Canoe Adventures there were around 50 large water birds, not sure what they were. I wanted to get a photo, however was a little close to them and banged the kayak with the paddle as I got my camera out, thus I only got a few in shot as they flew away.

This is the small tidal pool the control was in during geoquest last year, shame I missed this leg, though the tide was a little low to paddle in here currently.

fullsize
There was also a branch across the entrance to the tidal pool.

fullsize
Stopped at the beach next to the tidal pool.

fullsize
This is the start of my paddle down Warrel Creek on Sunday morning. The mist in the hills was rather pretty, though I was happy that the sun came out and weather became warmer soon after.

fullsize
Lower shot down the creek.

fullsize
More creek less steve/boat.

fullsize
I picked a flower somewhere along the creek to give to my sister, I took it off the boat for some reason when stopped later and forgot to keep it.

fullsize
Pleasant paddling, around 11 KMh comfortably with the flow of the water and gorgeous surrounds.

fullsize
In the marshy area down near Scotts Head I paddled down a small tributary until it was almost to narrow to turn my 6.2 metre long boat around in.

fullsize
I stopped here just to see if it gave any exact clues as to where I was, near the back of Scotts head I think as I had seen some houses near the water near here.

fullsize
Getting close to the beach, after this the creek ran along the back of the beach area all the way to Nambucca Heads, this meant some shallower sections in parts of the creek and a change in the make up of the banks.

fullsize
I found the private property with the big VB sign up amusing.

fullsize
I stopped for a quick rest next to a swinging rope on the edge of the creek.

fullsize
The water got deep quickly so this rope is probably safe... assuming it does not break as you swing out.

fullsize
The view to Nambucca Heads and the V-Wall from where I stopped to ring Jane for a pick up.
